Freestyle Terrain at Mount Snow & Carinthia have been together since 1992 and the first ever East Coast Terrain Park – Un Blanco Gulch. Since then new and innovative features have been created to take freestyle skiing and riding to the next level.   Carinthia at Mount Snow boasts the largest terrain park system in the East but we also want to be the safest.

The National Ski Areas Association and Burton Snowboards have developed the Smart Style Freestyle Terrain Safety initiative, a cooperative effort to continue the proper use and progression of freestyle terrain at mountain resorts, while also delivering a unified message that is clear, concise, and effective.

Carinthia at Mount Snow adheres to the guidance, logos, and signage developed through the Smart Style Freestyle Safety Program.  All of Carinthia parks and safety signage are designated by an orange color.  Our Rangers in 2010/2011 will also feature Orange gear so if you ever have a question or need assistance just hunt out the orange.

Almost all the terrain at Carinthia may contain jumps, hits, ramps, banks, fun boxes, jibs, rails, half pipes, quarter pipes, and other constructed or natural terrain features.

PRIOR to using Freestyle Terrain, you are responsible for familiarizing yourself with Freestyle Terrain and obeying all instructions, warnings and signs.Freestyle skills require maintaining control on the ground, and in the air.

Know the Four Codes of Smart Style

  1. MAKE A PLAN
Every time you use freestyle terrain, make a plan for each feature you want to use. Your speed, approach and take off will directly affect your maneuver and landing.
  2. LOOK BEFORE YOU LEAP
Scope around the jumps first, not over them. Know your landings are clear and clear yourself out of the landing area.
  3. EASY STYLE IT
Start small and work your way up.
  4. RESPECT GETS RESPECT
From the lift line through the park.

Check out the basics, safety information and tips from the pros in the Smart Style video to enable terrain parks to be fun and safe for everyone.

Skiing and snowboarding can be enjoyed in many ways. At ski areas you may see people using alpine, snowboard, telemark, cross country and other specialized ski equipment, such as that used by disabled or other skiers. Regardless of how you decide to enjoy the slopes, always show courtesy to others and be aware that there are elements of risk in skiing that common sense and personal awareness can help reduce. Observe the code listed below and share with other skiers the responsibility for a great skiing experience.

  1. Always stay in control.
  2. People ahead of you have the right of way.
  3. Stop in a safe place for you and others.
  4. Whenever starting downhill or merging, look uphill and yield.
  5. Use devices to help prevent runaway equipment.
  6. Observe signs and warnings, and keep off closed trails.
  7. Know how to use the lifts safely.

Be safety conscious and
KNOW THE CODE. IT’S YOUR RESPONSIBILITY.
